*(Betawi: a term for native citizen of Jakarta)

On my walk to the office today, I saw a convoy of motorbikes of people with green+black costumes, which I later found out was a convoy of Forum Betawi Rembug (FBR). This convoy was so annoying because these people were not obeying traffic regulation, and I’m sure they were also annoying other drivers.

1.These guys don’t give a jack’s ass about traffic lights, be it on red/yellow/green, they would go straight ahead. Not only this is violation of the law, but this also endangers other drivers or pedestrians.
2. None of these guys had their helmets on (which is against the law in Indonesia).
3. They were horning and honking their heads out… making so much noise, while waving their flags and banners around.

Other occasions, when you see a bunch of them on the streets, they look at you like they’re trying to pick a fight; or that you’ve done something wrong. Same as any other “stupid” (sorry) organization who enjoys vandalizing public property and people’s businesses.

So… someone please tell me… what really is the purpose of FBR? What VALUES do they uphold? And what good have they done for Jakarta?
Don’t get me wrong… I have a lot of respect for many Betawi citizen. It’s not the Betawi citizens I’m against, but this FBR thing really is just a lot of bullcrap.
Grow up. Please.

Thought no.1:
New place, sitting at my new desk. Barely know anyone yet. It’s like a deja vu of my first days in my previous jobs. Everyone seems squirming around (looking) busy doing a bunch of things; but when you really go up to them and ask what they’re doing… one of them is distributing wedding invitations, the other one is busy calling his wife, because his son was brought into hospital last night. Some are walking around doing God knows what… of course some really are doing something… like meetings and stuff.
It’s such a different atmosphere (compared to my previous job)… just hope that I can adapt. Today there’s not yet any clear job description of what I’m supposed to be doing, I guess all I’ll do is browse through the web, or just ask questions about this and that… hehehe… what a life!

Thought no.2:
Damn… final exams are coming, and assignments are all coming to deadline soon. I got term papers, take home exams, group presentations that are all dued for next week. AARRGHHH!!! I hardly ever have time to do them, as I work til five, go to campus and study til 9.30 pm. Arrive at my room at around 10, mentally exhausted. As for weekends… well.. you know, after having to go through the routine for the whole week, it’s hard to not give myself a break on weekends. Weekends are great to refresh our minds and get set for the next week.
“It’s the price you pay for the life you choose” (from Godfather III).

Thought no.3:
My girlfriend called in sick today. She doesn’t feel well… She’s been like that since yesterday, when she was actually sent home by her boss for looking so pale… Hehehe.
I hope you get well soon, my love :)

Thought no.4:
It has been a while since I’ve gone to Semarang. I kinda miss my family. But then again, my brother’s coming here this weekend. In fact he will stay in Jakarta for the next month doing his internship. So that’s kinda cool. Still I really need to see my folks.

Thought no.5:
ALL MY SOCKS ARE GONE MAN!!!! I don’t know what the hell’s going on. You see… in Jakarta I rented a room for a particular price. And included in that price was laundry service. But somehow, I keep wearing the same socks recently. This morning I counted I’m supposed to have 12 socks. But recently all I’ve been wearing is 3. So where are my sockssss???!!!!

Thought no.6:

I miss my BNI-divtek05(that’s what we call ourselves) friends… do come here soon.

MoviesSeptember 12, 2005 4:01 am

After a long absence of not going to cinemas (I do miss cinema atmosphere), yesterday me and my girlfriend went to see Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (CaTCF). What intrigued me to see this movie, was the fact that it was based on the book by Roald Dahl (brilliant and imaginative writer), directed by Tim Burton and that the leading actor was Johnny Depp.

CaTCF is about a boy called Charlie Bucket (played by young Freddie Highmore) who came from a really poor family, whose father worked in a toothpaste factory and hardly ever has enough money to provide food on the table (all they could eat was cabbage soup). He lived nearby a chocolate factory owned by Willy Wonka (played by Depp), which made the most famous and delicious chocolate.

However, this factory is misterious as no one ever saw any employee come in or out the factory and so no one ever saw what Willy Wonka looked like. Until one day, Willy Wonka announced an advertisement that, 5 lucky kids from around the world would be invited to come to the factory and given a tour from Willy Wonka himself. Willy Wonka randomly put 5 golden tickets in his chocolate bars, which are then shipped worldwide. Kids from all over the world competed so hard to find the golden tickets.

Poor Charlie Bucket who (like any other kids) also wanted to win the golden ticket, after a series of fortunate (and unfortunate) events, found one of the tickets and (accompanied by his grandpa) was invited along with the other 4 winners to the factory.

In the factory, they were given a tour by Willy Wonka. And I think the moral of the movie is in this tour. Because there are a lot of moral messages pictured in this part of the movie. And this message is not only intended for children, but also their parents. Things like how too much TV can mess up kids’ minds; how parents are not to spoil their kids too much; and that kids are supposed to be kids, they’re not supposed to become too ambitious (even worse, the fact that its really their parents’ ambition).

In this factory tour, Willy Wonka also had flashbacks of his youth. Willy had conflicts with his father (a Dentist), who made him put on horrible looking braces around his teeth and mouth, which made Willy look like a monster. His father hated chocolates and always told Willy that it was bad for his teeth. Conflicts got worse, because Willy always craved for chocolates and came a time where Willy tried his first chocolate, which arose more conflicts and made him leave the house and build his own factory (of course the actual story is much more exciting, but I just cut it short :P)

At the end of the tour, Willy offered Charlie something that an ordinary kid couldn’t refuse. However Charlie refused this offer for a reason that Willy couldn’t understand (at least not that instant). This reason bothered Willy for a while, and made him come to Charlie again to ask. After some time, Willy understood something that made him reunite with his father.

This movie is a good movie. It is intended for children because it was based on a children’s book, however I had such a good time watching this movie (and I’m sure I wasn’t the only adult in the theatre that thinks that way). It is full of moral and good teachings. Although (I think) they could’ve elaborated more on Willy Wonka’s past, and how connected Charlie was to the chocolate factory, I think the viewers could still grasp the story.
I personally like how Tim Burton put Roald Dahl’s imagination into the screen, like how Willy had elevators that could move in all direction (not only up-down), and how Willy could send chocolates through television, and what Mike Teavee (one of the kids) looked like after the tour :P It was amusing.

WorkSeptember 10, 2005 4:21 am

Its saturday today.
Here I am at the office.
Its still so quiet here, no one’s yet to arrive. Its 9 am. That’s when they (vendor people) said they’d be here. But I would bet my money they are not gonna arrive until at least 10 am. Punctuality is like a word that just doesn’t exist in the dictionary.
Anyways, today’s supposed to be an easy job, just supervising some guys reinstalling the new PABX and connecting it to the newly installed E1 connection (initially supposed to be used for data, then management decided to utilize it for voice). Of course, easy doesn’t mean fast, this process may take the whole day. Just hoping that nothing’s wrong when we get to testing.

There goes my plans to go jogging with my girlfriend.
There goes my plans to work on school homework.
Well… can’t win ‘em all…
