So here’s the top headlines in the indonesian media recently:
- The Adam Air Crash
- The Ferry disaster
Both news are about transportion-related accidents. The accidents occured almost 2 weeks ago, and the body of the plane nor the ship is yet to be found. SAR teams comprising of the National SAR, Police, Armed Forces are scouting everyday non-stop for the victims and the body of the craft.

Next up, the effect of Isobel Storm is felt in the eastern part of Indonesia, causing local fishermen to not set sail due to the rough seas (waves reaching 2-3 meters high). It also halts ships that supply basic needs, and consumer goods, causing isolated islands to face scarcity and price boom for rice, oil and other food supplies.

Taken from the news this morning, the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR/MPR) demanded (another) raise. According to the head of Comission A, this raise is meant to serve as incentives for DPR sessions that are related to drafting and approval of Decrees/Acts.

The more I think of it, every blunder in this country is somewhat caused by the lack of “sense of urgency” in most of Indonesian people. Let alone low cost airlines; the road traffic is the worst of all. Traffic lights? They’re just pretty colors that bother you. Policemen? Can’t beat them, bribe them. Motorcycles, they seem to have immunity to law; not only because they are fast and can easily dodge cops or people they hit. they tend to have this bonding amongst them. If a biker is involved in an accident with a bigger vehicle, car for example, the other bikers will stand on his/her side, without even trying to find out who had the right of way.
I think everyone should realize that there’s not a single person in the country that is not part of the problem. Given that fact, everyone is also part of the solution. Bikers, drivers, passengers, flight attendants, pilots, maintenance engineers, law enforcement officers, even the honorable members of the parliament all are part of the solution. Start with the small things, as my (former) favorite preacher once mentioned, then start with yourself, and start right now.
