“Human beings, no matter where we go, what decisions we make, we will always feel angry, sad, happy, bored. Those are humanly feelings that are forever attached to us, regardless of the decisions we make” - Arida Permata

Tommorow will be my last day in this company. After working for 17 months, I have decided to rejoin my previous employer. I am planning to relocate Ashgabat, Turkmenistan along with my wife. I guess it’s the adventure that drove us to take this opportunity. At first I had doubts of whether it would be best for us; being far from our families and friends, living in a country with totally different language and culture. But what my wife said that night, somehow was the antidote of all the doubts I had that night. (more…)

jiffest

Wohoooo!!!!!!!!!!
After a long wait, Jakarta International Film Festival (JIFFEST) 2006 is here! The festival will last for 10 days, from December 8 -17. The festival will showcase around 200 movies from over 35 countries. There are many admission free movies, such as Italian, Hungarian, Turks. All Indonesian movies in the festival are also admission free.
I think one of the major changes in this year’s festival is that the screenings are conducted at one of the most elite cinemas in the city, which is the EX Theater at plaza EX. I guess that also explains the increase in membership price.
Anyway, we bought another silver membership this year, and here are the movies we’ll be watching from JIFFEST:

- The Illusionist
- Volver
- All The Kings’ Men
- Lights in The Dusk
- El Aura

We’ll probably be watching a few other foreign movies such as Distant, Mio Cognato, Russian Dolls, El Abrazo Partido. Can’t hardly wait for the event to commence.
Hope to see some of you out there.

Ones you get after finishing one semester of night classes; homeworks, presentations, quiz and exams.

Yesterday I arrived at my boarding house at 4.30 pm (yes, i did leave work early :P), and it’s so great to be able to enjoy the sunset, with a cup of warm tea on the balcony. After a quick shower and the Maghrib prayer (a quick one, too :D ), i dove into bed, and crawled under my blanket.

Grabbed a Martin Scorcese DVD, “Kundun”, and quickly fell asleep. Now don’t get me wrong, Kundun is a good movie, and Scorcese is definetely one of my favorite directors, but the first 30 minute of it, is enough to make anyone insanely sleepy :P Oh and another note, did you know that Martin is banned from entering Tibet, after he had made this movie? :P

Well, term 3 just ended, term 4 coming up in a week. So many things to do and prepare in the next 3 months; thesis, projects, wedding (oops, did I say wedding? :P), its gonna be a hectic end of year.

JiFFest

JiFFest will start this Friday (Dec 9th). Me and my girlfriend just bought a Silver Membership Card, and we’ll be watching 5 movies from the festival :

1. Le Grand Voyage (The Grand Voyage) - France/ Morocco
2. 5 x 2 - France
3. Diarios de Motocicleta (The Motorcycle Diaries) - Brazil
4. Millions - United Kingdom
5. 2046 - China/ Hongkong

There’s a German movie called “Der Untergang” (The Downfall) that I’d also like to see… This movie is about the downfall of Hitler. But thankfully my girlfriend had already bought the DVD… good girl ;)
Next week is indeed a very busy week… hehehe… :)

After a long absence of not going to cinemas (I do miss cinema atmosphere), yesterday me and my girlfriend went to see Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (CaTCF). What intrigued me to see this movie, was the fact that it was based on the book by Roald Dahl (brilliant and imaginative writer), directed by Tim Burton and that the leading actor was Johnny Depp.

CaTCF is about a boy called Charlie Bucket (played by young Freddie Highmore) who came from a really poor family, whose father worked in a toothpaste factory and hardly ever has enough money to provide food on the table (all they could eat was cabbage soup). He lived nearby a chocolate factory owned by Willy Wonka (played by Depp), which made the most famous and delicious chocolate.

However, this factory is misterious as no one ever saw any employee come in or out the factory and so no one ever saw what Willy Wonka looked like. Until one day, Willy Wonka announced an advertisement that, 5 lucky kids from around the world would be invited to come to the factory and given a tour from Willy Wonka himself. Willy Wonka randomly put 5 golden tickets in his chocolate bars, which are then shipped worldwide. Kids from all over the world competed so hard to find the golden tickets.

Poor Charlie Bucket who (like any other kids) also wanted to win the golden ticket, after a series of fortunate (and unfortunate) events, found one of the tickets and (accompanied by his grandpa) was invited along with the other 4 winners to the factory.

In the factory, they were given a tour by Willy Wonka. And I think the moral of the movie is in this tour. Because there are a lot of moral messages pictured in this part of the movie. And this message is not only intended for children, but also their parents. Things like how too much TV can mess up kids’ minds; how parents are not to spoil their kids too much; and that kids are supposed to be kids, they’re not supposed to become too ambitious (even worse, the fact that its really their parents’ ambition).

In this factory tour, Willy Wonka also had flashbacks of his youth. Willy had conflicts with his father (a Dentist), who made him put on horrible looking braces around his teeth and mouth, which made Willy look like a monster. His father hated chocolates and always told Willy that it was bad for his teeth. Conflicts got worse, because Willy always craved for chocolates and came a time where Willy tried his first chocolate, which arose more conflicts and made him leave the house and build his own factory (of course the actual story is much more exciting, but I just cut it short :P)

At the end of the tour, Willy offered Charlie something that an ordinary kid couldn’t refuse. However Charlie refused this offer for a reason that Willy couldn’t understand (at least not that instant). This reason bothered Willy for a while, and made him come to Charlie again to ask. After some time, Willy understood something that made him reunite with his father.

This movie is a good movie. It is intended for children because it was based on a children’s book, however I had such a good time watching this movie (and I’m sure I wasn’t the only adult in the theatre that thinks that way). It is full of moral and good teachings. Although (I think) they could’ve elaborated more on Willy Wonka’s past, and how connected Charlie was to the chocolate factory, I think the viewers could still grasp the story.
I personally like how Tim Burton put Roald Dahl’s imagination into the screen, like how Willy had elevators that could move in all direction (not only up-down), and how Willy could send chocolates through television, and what Mike Teavee (one of the kids) looked like after the tour :P It was amusing.
